Sensory

What is Sensory Processing?
Sensory processing is vital in understanding the world around us.  Sensory processing refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from our senses (hearing, sight, smell, touch and taste) and turns them into appropriate responses.

Why is it important?
Whether you are playing in the sand, learning to ride a bike or swinging on monkey bars, your ability to do these activities well relies on sensory processing.  For example: when riding a bike, you need to know where your feet are without looking, how hard to press the pedals, and how to control the steering all while maintaining your balance.

From knowing the difference between hot and cold, hard and soft and feeling the difference between sharp and smooth, our body has built in reflexes for safety precautions. Think of how you automatically remove your hand from a painful stimulus without thinking. Now, imagine if your child  did not feel this pain and the damage it may cause.

In a fun and engaging environment, sensory based Occupational Therapy aims to promote appropriate responses to sensation so your child is able to function in their learning and leisure environments.
